Queens Plays Spartans to 1-1 Draw

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team took on the University of Tampa Spartans in their second game of the season this afternoon playing the Spartans to a 1-1 draw. The tie brings both the Royals' and Tampa's records to 1-0-1 on the season.

Queens got going early with a goal in the 9th minute of play scored by Thea Mallett. Alana Jefferson earned the assist on the score finding Mallet open in the left side of the box. The Spartans would even the score in the 17th minute with a goal from Erika Peitersen who found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Mack Beidleman.  Neither team found another goal in the half as the 1-1 score held until the break.

The second half was a back and forth affair between the two teams with Alana Jefferson creating a close scoring opportunity for Queens when she fired off a shot that hit the crossbar in the 74th minute. However, neither team would get the chance to score the go ahead goal as the time ticked off the clock with a 1-1 score taking the game into overtime.

Both teams would have a hard time getting into an offensive rhythm in the overtime periods which saw just a combined total of three shots. The Royals' saw two shots in the first overtime period that went wide, while Tampa's one shot in the final 10 minutes of play resulted in a save for Queens' Rachel Quest.

The Royals outshot the Spartans, 13-10, and Quest made three saves. Caroline Frykgard of Tampa totaled two saves.

Queens is on the road for the next four games and then returns home September 20 when they will take on Tusculum College in a South Atlantic Conference match up set to kickoff at 5 p.m. Their first stop on the road will be at Georgia College on September 8.
