Queens Softball Season Comes to Close

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte's season has come to an end as they fell 8-0 in six innings to Newberry College in a consolation bracket game at the 2017 SAC Softball Tournament at Byerly Park.

After pulling out an elimination game earlier in the afternoon, eighth-seeded Queens (21-29) was unable to find any offense against the third-seed Wolves (33-15).

The Wolves wasted little finding its way on the scoreboard as they struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Right fielder Christina Linton and second baseman Natalie Willis led the frame off by each reaching base. After a sac bunt moved both over, designated player Haley Simonds then drove Linton in on a groundout to second base.

The Royals attempted to rally in both the second and third innings, but in each situation Newberry starting pitcher Emily Marchbanks was able to wiggle of the hook. The second inning was particularly disheartening for Queens as they had runners on second third with no outs and still were unable to push across a run.

Those missed opportunities came back to haunt the Royals as Newberry went on to score four runs in the fourth inning, a run in the fifth and then two more in the sixth to end the game early.

Queens had one last chance to stave off elimination in the top of the sixth when designated player Ashton Whitaker and left fielder Elaina Frantellizzi produced back-to-back hits. Once again, though, NC's Marchbanks got out of trouble as she retired the next two Royals in order.

Marchbanks earned the victory for the Wolves as she tossed six innings and allowed zero runs on three hits. She struck out five and walked two.

First baseman Kelly Winter had the lone other hit for Queens as she produced a third inning double.
