Royals Rally to Split Georgia College Series

Milledgeville, Ga. – Finishing off the weekend at the Bobcat Kickoff Tournament, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team battled in a double-header against host Georgia College & State University. The Royals fell in the first game (8-1) but dominated in the second with a 6-2 win. Queens moves to 1-3 on the year as the Bobcats end the weekend with a 3-1 record.

In the first game, both Queens and Georgia College struggled to get hits in the first two-innings. However, in the top of the third, Queens' own Abby Lathan managed to hit a double, getting her to second base. Ashton Whitaker was up to bat next, singling through the left side and advancing to second on the throw. Whitaker recorded a RBI as Lathan reached home plate making the score 1-0.

The Bobcats were quick to answer, however, when it was their turn to get their bats swinging. With two runners on base in the bottom of the third, Georgia College's Danielle Bernstein singled and advanced to second, due to a throwing error, allowing Shawnda Martin to head home for the run (1-1). The Bobcats recorded four more runs in the third to put them up 5-1.

The Royals were unable to put any more runs on the board as Georgia College recorded three more in the sixth inning to make the final score 8-1.

Courtney Pearson (0-2) pitched for the Royals seeing 10 hits and three strikeouts through six innings of play.

Faith Flanders (2-0) moved her pitching record to 2-0 after giving up five hits and one run through five innings. Kayla Price pitched the remaining two innings with no hits and no runs.

In the second matchup, Queens was the first to put runs on the board when Hanna Hasker crossed home plate in the second inning. The flow of the game was in favor of the Royals as Sabrina Martinez hit a homerun to left field, bringing Evie Scott in to score and putting the team up by three. The Bobcats answered recording two runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-2.

The Royals widened their lead in the fifth with a hit from Kelly Winter through the left side recording two RBI's after both Martinez and Scott reached home plate. Georgia College failed to score in the last two innings, leaving Queens to prevail with the win.

Scott (1-1) pitched for the Royals the majority of the second game seeing one strikeout and five hits in her five innings played. She would record the win. Courtney Pearson came in as the relief pitching seeing two innings with no runs, two hits, and one strikeout.

The Bobcats would see three pitchers take the field as Cassidy Rice (0-1) record the loss after 2.1 innings played. She suffered three hits and three runs. Brook Taylor pitched 1.2 innings with one hit while Price pitched three full inning with three hits and three runs.

The Royals head to Park Road Park for their home opener Thursday, February 9, for a double-header against the University of North Carolina-Pembroke. The first game of the series is set to begin at 2 p.m.
