CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three separate players finished with seven kills in a 3-0 (25-8, 25-22, 25-15) win over Newberry College on Tuesday night, helping the Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team pick up its 10th win of the season.
Queens moved to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the South Atlantic Conference after recording a .257 hitting percentage and a season-low 11 attack errors. In contrast, Newberry fell to 6-8 with a 2-6 league mark as Queens held the visiting team to a .000 hitting percentage and had 10 service aces for the second straight match.
The Royals were in control throughout the opening set of play, hitting .455 as team and forcing the Wolves to a negative hitting mark. Queens began the set with a 9-2 run, including back-to-back service aces from freshman
Jordan Proszenyak. The margin was never less than five points as QU cruised to the win.
In the second set, led early with a 5-4 advantage but an 8-2 run by the hosts built Queens a 12-7 lead. The Royals lead extended to seven points, however five consecutive points by the Wolves put them within striking distance. Two kills from freshman
Casey Tarvin and another from senior
Jessica Raines down the stretch helped Queens pull away and build a 2-0 lead in the match.
A 7-3 run for Queens opened the third and final set of play as the Royals were in control until the end, finishing the match on another Proszenyak kill.
Proszenyak led Queens' efforts from the service line, tallying four aces, while sophomore
Mallory Swarts followed with two service aces to go along with 10 digs on defense.
Raines was a lead on both offense and defense during the match, finishing with seven kills and six total blocks, while fellow senior
Rebecca Cochran had seven kills and a team-high 12 digs. Tarvin was the third Royal with seven kills in the match, as junior
Taylor Henry hit .545 with six kills and four total blocks.
The Royals continue their four-game homestand this weekend, hosting Lincoln Memorial University on Friday at 7 p.m. before welcoming Carson-Newman University to Curry Arena on Saturday for a 2 p.m match.
