Charlotte, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte Department of Athletics is pleased to announce
Hannah Long as the head coach of the volleyball program. Long joins the Royals from Southwestern University where she served as the program's head coach since 2004.
"We are very pleased to welcome
Hannah Long to the Queens family," said Interim Athletic Director
Cherie Swarthout. "Coach Long brings with her a wealth of experience and proven success that will be instrumental in leading our volleyball program. With a solid foundation already in place, we are excited to reach new levels of excellence through her vision and under her leadership."
While at Southwestern, Long built the program to a 362-93 overall record which included three conference titles in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). She was named SCAC Coach of the Year four-times while claiming the American Volleyball Coaches Association's South Region Coach of the Year in 2009. As she helped to raise the team to a Top 25 division III program, Long produced nine AVCA All-American nods and five SCAC player of the year recipients.
Long's vision for the program brought the Pirates to a NCAA Regional Tournament on 10 different occasions across her 13 year span as head coach. The team reached the regional semifinals six different times with her latest coming in 2013. She would reach the regional finals match, twice.
"I am so excited to be joining the Queens family," said Long. "This is such a unique and special opportunity. Queens' commitment to achieving success on a national level is obvious. I was so impressed with everyone I met. The university has a clear vision for providing the best student-athlete experience possible with state of the art facilities, dedicated professional staff support, and first class educational programs. This dedication to athletic success, without sacrificing education, mirrors my vision as a coach. (The fact) that a school of this caliber is nestled in the great city of Charlotte, made it an irresistible offer. I am anxious to work alongside all of the Royals who are achieving so much and want to thank Interim Athletic Director
Cherie Swarthout for trusting me with the future of the volleyball program."
Prior to Southwestern, Long worked as an assistant coach at Western Oregon University and Portland State University. A player herself, Long was a two-sport athlete while at Portland State playing for both the school's volleyball and basketball team. For volleyball, she served time as team captain in addition to making both the Big Sky all-conference team and the all-academic team. She earned the nod as the school's Female Athlete of the Year in 1999 and the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1998.
Long has a master's degree in educational administration from Texas A&M and a bachelor's degree from Portland State in mathematics and communication.
