Royals Advance with Win over Anderson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team earned a spot in the South Atlantic Conference semifinals on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, going 3-1 over Anderson. The Royals saw a 25-12, 25-18, 19-25, 26-24 victory over the fifth seed in the tournament Anderson. Queens, the No. 4 seed, moves to 20-8 on the year as Anderson's conference play concludes with a 19-12.

Rebecca Cochran secured a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs during the night's performance. She placed second in kills only to Jones who tallied 21. Jones would hit a .306 in the four set game. As a team the Royals tallied 11 blocks as Cochran and Taylor Henry equaled at five apiece. Sydney Kunz held 50 assists at the end of the night as Mallory Swarts led in digs with 20.

Anderson was led on the floor by Marissa Mitter who found 15 kills and 15 digs. Emily Conlin led the team in assists tallying 42 while Jayln Knight tabbed 23 digs.  

Queens launched out to an early lead in the first set seeing their way to a 17-4 score. Anderson managed to shorten the gap but Queens tabbed their first win at 25-12.

Anderson started the second set off with four unanswered points but Queens battled back to meet the Trojans at 6-6. Anderson managed to take the lead again but the Royals fought to stay close again finding a tying point at 10-10. The tie allowed the Royals to gain control of the set, holding the lead until the end. The team marked the victory with a three-point run with a block from Alex Thompson and a service ace from Swarts aiding them.  

Although Anderson held the lead in the opening points of the third game, Queens held close challenge the Trojan's claim for the set. A 9-2 run by Anderson force the Royals to use a timeout call, 18-10, as Queens looked to chip away at the gap. The Royals made a run for the set forcing Anderson to call a timeout at 22-17 as Queens slowly picked up momentum. Their efforts would fall shy as Anderson found a 25-19 score for the set.

In long rallying points, both teams pushed for control early with Queens finding a narrow lead. The game swapped back and forth with the Royals using a timeout trailing 16-14. Anderson held the lead heading into the last few points using a timeout call with a 20-18 lead. Coming out of the break, Queens rattled off three back-to-back points to tie the game at 21-21. The Royals eventually force their way into the lead with strong hits coming from Jones and Henry to top the Trojans at 23-22.  Jones again found a kill to bring match point Anderson survived as Rachel Burts found the floor, 24-24. Jones again found a kill to move the team with Henry and Cochran taking a block in the next point to give the Royals the win.

Queens will head to Wingate as they host the remainder of the tournament. The Royals will compete in their semifinal match on Friday, November 18th against the winner of the Wingate versus Tusculum match.
