SALISBURY, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team opened their season tonight against Barton College in the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge hosted by Catawba College. Queens fell 79-46 to the Bulldogs to begin their season at 0-1, while Barton gets a 1-0 start.
Queens would be first to get on the board after a steal by
Sarah Henson led to a three-pointer scored by
McKell Oliverio. Henson then scored a three on the Royals' next possession to give Queens a 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs then responded with an 8-0 run to take over control of the lead and go up 10-6 with 7:23 to play in the first quarter. Barton would go on to lead by as much as seven before the period ended with Queens trailing 22-16.
Turnovers riddled the Royals' offense in the second quarter as the Bulldogs extended their lead to 26 by the half, 52-26, while holding Queens to just four points in the period.
In the second half, Henson helped breathe some life into Queens' offense in the third quarter scoring 10 points in the period. However, the Royals would trail 65-40 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Bulldogs then secured their win in the fourth, seeing their largest lead of the night when they led 80-44 with 3:04 to play.
The Royals shot 42.5-percent from the floor, while connecting on 8-of-14 shots from behind the arc. Queens was edged in the rebound category, 32-31. The Bulldogs scored 40 points tonight off of Queens' 31 turnovers.
Henson completed play with 18 points to lead the Royals.
Maggie Stewart led Queens under the glass, totaling seven rebounds.
Barton's Kianna Wynn led all players on the floor with 20 points, while Tatyana Jackson added 19 points. Karimah Dean added 13 points.
Queens will return to the court tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they face the University of Mount Olive in their final game of the SAC/CC Challenge.
