WINGATE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team suffered a loss to the second ranked team in the conference on Friday, October 21, 2016, as the Royals traveled to Wingate to face the Bulldogs. Wingate took the match in three sets going 25-10, 25-14, 25-15 ending a five game streak by the Royals who dropped to 14-5 overall and 11-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Wingate advanced to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in league play.
A slow start in the first set put Queens on the defensive early to a Wingate team that posted as No. 23 in the nation two weeks prior, despite the team having falling out of the rankings in this week's poll. The Royals started to find kills but Wingate's lead made the gap uncatchable as they claimed the set.
Set two had both teams open even but momentum quickly shifted with six unanswered points towards the Bulldog's side. Queens called a timeout allowing the match to settle. Although the Royals managed to find points as the game progressed, Wingate sealed the win with another 6-0 run late in the set.
Although Wingate jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set three, Queens fought to find a tying point at 11-11 making the home team call a timeout. The break allowed Wingate to find a 7-1 run putting the match out of reach for the Royals.
Meredith Jones led the team with eight kills followed by
Taylor Henry with six.
Sydney Kunz tallied 20 assists in the night as
Rebecca Cochran notched eight digs for the team lead.
Wingate saw Oakley Attaway led with 11 kills followed by teammate Katie Bludau who had 10. Rachel Alles led the team in assists finding 19 in the match as Treslyn Ortiz tallied nine digs.
