Royals Breeze Past Tornados

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team secured a four set win over the Brevard College Tornados on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Queens went 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 to claim the win and move to 13-4 overall and 10-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Brevard dropped to 4-16 on the season and 3-10 in conference play.

Rebecca Cochran tallied a double-double as she tabbed 14 kills and 14 digs. She would hit .314 for the night. Meredith Jones led the team in kills with 19 while Sydney Kunz topped the Royals in assists with 46. Megan Mancini led the team in digs with 25.

Brevard saw two players find 12 kills in the match as Savannah Cox and Callie Chappell led in the stat. Erin Barr tabbed 39 assists for the team's top while Aleksandra Vrvilo led the Tornados with 26 digs.

Despite a close battle, Brevard took the first set to gain the advantage in the match.

Queens broke out of an even start with a 5-1 run in the second set to see a 17-12 score. Brevard battled to come within three but Queens kept the team out of reach to even the match at a set apiece.

It was the Royals who again found the breakaway run pulling ahead 15-9. A 3-0 run moved Brevard within two, 19-17, forcing the two teams to battle late in the set. Kunz found a gap on the floor to claim the game.

Queens jumped out early but Brevard tabbed four unanswered to take the lead at 5-4. Queens took the next string to make it an 11-6 game but the Tornados found the tying point off a run. As momentum continued to switch between the two squads Queens held onto a narrow lead at 22-20 as Brevard used a timeout. The Tornados found a kill coming out of the break but Queens secured three points-in-a-row to claim the match.

Queens will be back at home on Tuesday, October 18, for a 7 p.m., match. The team will host Catawba College.
