Queens holds off Eagles comeback for 8th straight victory

Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team was able to hold off second half comeback efforts of the Eagles this evening to snag an 82-80 South Atlantic Conference win, and extend their winning streak to eight. The Royals improve to 9-5 on the year and 6-2 in the league with the road win, while Carson-Newman College falls to 6-8 on the season and 4-4 in the SAC.

Holding a 36-27 lead at the start of the second, Queens was able to stretch their lead out to as much as 11 before the Eagles were used a 7-0 spurt to pull within four, 44-40, with 14:51 to play. Todd Withers ended the Eagles run with an and one play to put Queens ahead 47-40, but Carson-Newman would not go away easily.

The Royals pulled ahead by seven on several occasions in the remaining minutes of play, and a three by Rob Lewis would put them up eight, 59-51, with 9:27 to play. However, a 9-0 run would give the Eagles their first lead of the game since the opening minute of action.

Three ties would follow before a jumper from Queens' Jared Hendryx at 5:05 put the Royals in the lead for good. Jedarian Jackson then followed his bucket with three points scored the old-fashioned way. The Eagles closed the gap to one around the three minute mark, but the Royals remained poised down the stretch to expand their lead back out to as much as seven points. A pair of three-pointers scored by the Eagles in the final 13 seconds of play would cut Queens' lead to just two at the final horn.

Lewis led the Royals this evening with 16 points, while Sean Morgan added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rankin, Hendryx and Withers each netted 11 points, while Jackson chipped in with 10 points.

Sawyer Williams led the eagles with 20 points, while Jared Johnson scored 18 points. Carson Brooks totaled 15 points, and Charles Clark scored 11 points.

This evening marks the first time that the Royals have defeated the Eagles on the road in five meetings between the two teams. Queens now leads the series 3-2. The Royals were also able to shoot 43.8 percent from the floor against an Eagles squad that is holding opponents to just 32.5 percent shooting this season.

The Royals are back home in Curry Arena on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. against Wingate University.
