Belmont, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte's women's tennis team took hold of a 9-0 match win over Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. The Royals held the Crusaders off the board refusing to give up a single game during the match.
The Royals put together an impenetrable lineup on Wednesday as the traveled to Belmont Abbey. Melissa Laing and Carlotta Nassi bounced back from a long weekend playing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament pairing together for the number one doubles spot. The two took on Katharine Miller and Alex Weber in an 8-0 run. Marta Gonzalez and Caroline Nielson also had a commanding performance on Court 2 with their 8-0 finish against Brigid Donohue and Elizabeth Leonards. Accompanying the Royals shutout pursuit in the doubles, Paige Ernest and Farina Rafiq brought an end to the pairs as they too took hold of an 8-0 score against Chrissie Ann-Dennis and Rachel Leonards.
With momentum from the doubles performance, Queens raced out to an early start in the singles. All six singles matches were concluded with a 6-0, 6-0, Queens victory as the team rounded out the day with a complete shutout of the Crusaders. Nassi took lead for the Royals battling Miller on Court 1 while her partner Laing took down Weber on Court 2. Nielson held off Donohue in the third singles matchup for the Royals helping to maintain their pressure over Belmont Abbey. Jacyln Rock took on Dennis and Hamilton battled Elizabeth Leonards on Courts 4 and 5 (respectfully) before Farina Rafiq closed off the match on Court 6 against Rachel Leonards.
They Royals will be back in action this Saturday, October 4, 2014, at the Wingate Invitational.
