Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) scored 26 points this evening, giving her 1,000 total points in her career as the Royals fell 81-61 to Pfeiffer University. The Royals drop to 7-6 in the league, while the Falcons improve to 9-3.
Pettaway was also able to grab seven rebounds and three steals in the loss, while fellow junior
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Falcons got going early with a 17-0 run at the start of the game. Queens' first bucket would come from
Abby Pettit (Apex, N.C., Cary Christian) at 12:50. The Royals tried to dig themselves out of the hole before the break, but the Falcons stayed hot going up by as much as 19 points before halftime. The Royals shot just 25.7 percent from the floor in the first half.
Queens improved on the offensive end in the second shooting 41.2 percent due in large part to Pettaway exploding with 19 second half points. The Royals cut Pfeiffer's lead to 10, 44-34, with 13:03 on the clock, but a 12-2 run for the visitors would stretch their lead out to 20 with less than nine minutes to play in the game. One final push from the Royals would bring them to within 11 of the Falcons, but once again Pfeiffer put together a run that included three buckets from behind the three-point arc to put the game away.
The Falcons shot 44 percent from deep and 90.9 percent from the foul line this evening. They were led by Christina Harvey who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kellie Rhoney also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists. Brittany Cox and Jodie Lemons each scored 17 points.
Queens travels to take on No. 16 Limestone College Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
