Box Score INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team took on defending South Atlantic Conference champions Wingate University in a neutral site match today. The Royals found themselves in a difficult match, and despite several comebacks and close sets Queens dropped the game 3-0. Following today's match the Royals stand at 10-7 on the season and 4-1 in Conference Carolinas play.
In the first set the Royals were engaged in a back-and-forth game, and found themselves down 8-12 at the halfway point. Despite the deficit the Royals were able display their ability come back and managed to close the gap, and eventually tied the score 23-23 following a huge block by
Keri Kemp (Lake Mary) and
Elizabeth Bialkowski (Millbrook) From there the teams exchanged points until the Bulldogs were able to string three points together to give them the 27-25 win.
In the second set the Royals found themselves playing from behind again as Bulldogs jumped out to another large lead. The Royals kept fighting to narrow the gap, but eventually dropped the set by the score 15-25.
In the third set Queens was able to once again rally from a deficit to make it 16-16 following a Kemp service ace then kill in consecutive points. For the rest of the set the Royals stayed close to Wingate until eventually dropping the set 25-21.
Kemp led the way with seven kills, and
McKenzie Martin (Stratford) chipped in on offense with 28 assists. Defensively
Jocelyn Kellinger (Cave Spring) paced the Royals with 19 digs, and was joined in double digits by
Taylor Riley (E.C. Glass) Brittney Barren (Blaine), and
Erin Mooney (Cardinal Mooney).
Following the match both teams joined to give a free skills clinic for any youth in attendance. The Royals return to action Wednesday when they host Augusta State in their first home game of the 2012 season. The Royals will be playing at Myers Park High School for all of their home games this season.
