Battle scores 26 in Queens’ loss to Pfeiffer

The Royals were defeated 80-68.

Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Despite 26 points from junior guard Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount), the Royals fell 80-68 this evening to the Pfeiffer University Falcons at Merner Gym. Queens University of Charlotte drops to 6-8 in the league and 8-15 on the year, while the Falcons improve to 7-7 in conference play and 12-11 on the season.

The Royals got off to a 4-0 start before the Falcons tied the game up and eventually took the lead. A three-pointer from Brittany Cox would put Pfeiffer up six points almost three minutes into play. Queens responded with a 9-0 run going ahead by three, 15-12, with 15:27 on the clock. The Falcons soon knotted things up again and went ahead by as much as 10 points, but Queens closed the half with a 10-2 spurt to head into the break down by one, 40-39.

The second half was a tight one. With three minutes to play Battle scored a layup bringing the Royals to within four of the home team. However, the Falcons quickly put five points on the board extending their lead back out to nine with 2:15 left in regulation. Pfeiffer clinched the win scoring 12 points in the final minutes.

In addition to scoring 26 points, Battle collected seven rebounds. Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) and Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Myatt also totaled 11 boards for her fifth double-double in a row. Pettaway notched nine rebounds and five steals.

Cox led the Falcons with 27 points, while Jodie Lemons scored 24. Shelley Reese netted 13 points.

The Royals will return to play on Saturday at the Grady Cole Center against Lees-McRae for Homecoming. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
