Royals topple Coker in three sets

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team hosted the Coker College Cobras today in a Conference Carolinas showdown. The Royals were able to make quick work of the Cobras, and won the match with a decisive three set victory.
 
From the beginning of the match and Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, Minn., Blaine) was quick to show off her serving skills, and picked up a service ace for the Royals first point. From there the Royals never looked back, and maintained a lead throughout the game. Taking the first set 25-17 the Royals showed their power of their offense with Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) leading with five kills in the set.
 
In the second set the Royals found themselves behind early by the score of 3-1, but rebounded and took a lead off several runs of great serves including multiple aces by Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass)  Once they took the lead the Royals continued to build upon the margin, and eventually took the set by 25-13.
 
In the third set the Royals found themselves down by the score of 11-5. Despite the margin the Royals rallied, and took the set by the score of 25-22.
 
Gibbs led the Royals on the day in kills with 13, and recorded a tremendous hitting percentage of .706. McKenzie Martin (Houston, Texas, Stratford) showed why she continues to rank high in the nation in assists with 33 on the day, and libero Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) paced the Royals with eight digs.
 
The Royals currently stand at 13-8 overall, and 7-1 in conference play. Queens returns to the court tomorrow when they host Belmont Abbey in a battle for the top of the East Division of Conference Carolinas.
