SALISBURY, N.C. – The Royals traveled up to Salisbury this evening to take on the Indians of Catawba College falling 3-1 at Frock Field. With the loss, Queens University of Charlotte is still in search of its first win of the season to get them over the hump. The Indians improve to 1-2.
Catawba's Alyssa Retuntie put the home team on the board early as she took a pass from Kristen Girardi and fired home a shot from the top of the box in the ninth minute. The score would stay that way until the break as Catawba held a 6-1 edge in shots in the opening half.
Girardi added to the Catawba lead just past the hour as Brittany Gibbons slotted a low cross into the box that the senior directed in from the six in the 62nd minute. Gibbons then pushed the margin to 3-0 as she bombed in a goal from 30 yards out with just under 20 minutes to play.
The Royals fought hard from there finding a goal three minutes later when
Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) got loose on a breakaway. More chances to score in the final minutes were stopped by Catawba's defense.
The Indians finished with an 11-4 edge in shots.
Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) made three stops for the Royals.
Queens is back in action on Saturday for their home opener against Newberry College at 6pm.
