CHARLOTTE, N.C.- With two convincing victories in one afternoon, the Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team was able to continue their 2011 season undefeated. The Royals defeated Virginia Union University and Saint Augustine's College on day two of the tournament, and these wins added to their triumph over Winston-Salem State University last night brings the Royals' record to 3-0.
The Royals faced the Panthers of Virginia Union in game one downing the visitors 25-12, 25-12 and 25-14. After a short break, Queens returned to the court defeating Saint Augustine's in three sets as well. (25-11, 25-14, 25-14)
Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, Minn., Blaine) led the Royals attack on the day with 14 kills.
Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ) and
Tori Hernandez (Gainesville, Fla., Gainesvillle) put the ball down 10 and 8 times, respectively, also contributing to the offense.
On the defensive end
Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) collected 31 digs while
Erin Mooney (Bradenton, Fla., Cardinal Mooney) had 22.
The Royals controlled the serve for a great majority of the day earning a combined total of 30 aces. Mooney led all with 10 while Barren tallied six.
Barren was named Tournament MVP after the final game of the evening.
Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) and Kellinger also joined her on the all-tournament team.
Queens returns to the court on Wednesday, September 7th at 6:30 p.m. against Lander University. Wednesday will also be Pack the Gym Night so come out and support.
