CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Royals fell 2-1 in double overtime this evening against North Greenville University. Queens is now 1-4 in the conference and 2-5 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 4-2 in league action and 5-4 overall.
The third time was charm as Felipe Netto (Salvador, Brazil, Colegio Candido Portinari) netted the first goal of the game on this third shot. His first try was high followed by a second one that hit the crossbar, but his scoring shot was right on the money. Netto turned on the wheels on a breakaway pulling the Crusaders' keeper out of the cage for the easy tap in and the 27th minute 1-0 lead.
Nathan Robbins responded for King with less than a minute left in the half. Jonathon Cleary found Robbins in the box for the game-tying goal.
The Royals outshot the visiting Crusaders 8-to-5 in the first half, and won two corner kicks to North Greenville's zero.
The second half of play was evenly matched with both teams taking five shots at the go ahead goal. Neither team could capitalize as the regulation horn sounded with a 1-1 tie.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Queens returned to the field for their final chance at picking up a win. However, Paul Stuebs of King took that opportunity away with a goal in the 106th minute. Stuebs was able to collect a ball off of a corner kick on the backside and sneak it into the net for the win. The Royals were a man down in the second overtime period due to a red card issued in the first.
Giancarlo Aristondo (Charlotte, N.C., South Mecklenburg) defended the net for Queens collecting three saves, while Justen Braddock tallied six for the Crusaders.
Queens returns to the field on Monday night at the Queens Sports Complex against Brevard College at 7:30 p.m.
