CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Hope Hartman (Buies Creek, N.C., Homeschool) scored the game-winning goal in the 70
th minute of play leading the Royals (5-7-1) past Mount Olive College (8-2-1) this evening in women's soccer. Queens University of Charlotte hands the Trojans their first conference loss of the season with the 2-1 win while improving to 5-2-1 in the league. The Trojans drop to 7-1 in Conference Carolinas play.
The Royals trailed by one at the break after the Trojans scored the only goal of the half in the tenth minute. Cara Paxson found Damilia Brooks creeping into the box behind Queens' keeper for the slipper into the net.
The one goal deficit at the end of the period was not due to a lack of aggressiveness on the offensive end by Queens as the home team outshot the Trojans 8-to-2 and won five corner kicks to Mount Olive's zero.
Queens found two goals in the second half lifting them past the visiting Trojans.
Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) rebounded her own shot putting it in the net to tie the game at 1-1. Ten minutes later Hartman would score the game-winner blasting a ball into the net from just in front of the goal.
Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) was awarded the assist on the play.
Lindsey Stanley took a shot in the 88
th minute in the Trojans' final attempt to equalize the match but it was stopped by Striano of Queens.
The Royals outshot Mount Olive 19-to-6 in this evenings match alongside winning 10 corners to the Trojans' one.
Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) collected two saves in goal for Queens, while Lyndsey McIntyre recorded eight saves for Mount Olive.
Queens will return on action on Saturday at 1 pm when they take on Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C.
