Royals fall in season opener to Saints

Flagler defeated Queens 1-0.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team opened up their season tonight against Flagler College in the 2010 Queens Women's Soccer Tournament at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. Under the Friday night lights the Royals fell to Flagler College 1-0 in a hard fought battle.

Both teams came out ready to play in what was obviously going to be a quick paced game. After the teams traded a number of fouls, Flagler was first to put a point on the board in the first half. Loren Cate snuck the ball past goalkeeper Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills )in the ninth minute of play. After a few good touches on the left side of the field she fired ball in to the back right corner of the net.

Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) of the Royals had a few chances to tie the game up before the half, but her shots went wide just missing the goal. The Saints closed the half up 1-0 and leading in shots 12 to six.

The Saints began the second half much like the first firing shots from all angles of the field. Landry stepped up making key saves to keep the Royals within striking distance. Wright continued to answer Flagler's shots leading the Royals offense taking seven total shots in the game.

Queens battled with Flagler to tie up the game as time ticked off the clock but kept coming up short at getting the ball in the net. The Royals' strong defensive presence kept the Saints from placing the ball in the net again during the game.

Queens finished the game with 11 shots to Flagler's 23. Landry totaled three saves while Flagler's goalkeeper, Christie Reuther tallied five.

The Royals will pick back up on Sunday, September 5 at 11:00 a.m. against Carson-Newman College.
