Queens wins 8-0 (6) and 7-1
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte softball found their groove with two wins over non-conference opponent Concord (2-4) Saturday afternoon at Park Road Park. The Royals (4-9) ended the first game in the sixth, winning 8-0, and won the second game 7-1.
The highlight of the day was a Brandy Jester's (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) first no-hitter at Queens logged in game one. Jester opened the twin-bill with five strikeout and no hits.
At the plate, Maria Goode (Charlotte, N.C., Providence) and Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central) led the team with four hits on the day, two in each game.
The back-to-back wins are the first for Queens in a single day.
Queens will use the momentum from the two wins as they face North Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga., on Sunday, Feb. 28. The Sainted ended the 2009 season ranked No. 2.
Game One
The Royals scored in all but two innings to win the first game of the day by a score of 8-0. The eight run advantage is the largest winning margin for Queens this season and the first shutout for the defense.
Goode scored the opening run of the game off of Lathbury's bat. Lathbury singled on the play to earn her sixth RBI of the season.
Megan Campbell (Raleigh, N.C., Athens Drive ) homered for the second time this year to start the second inning.
Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) hit her first of two triples in the third inning to drive in Goode, giving Queens a 3-0 lead. Turner was brought home by Lathbury on the next play.
Queens didn't score any in the fourth or fifth, but regained the pace in the sixth. Turner's second triple led the Royals followed by two doubles- one from Lathbury and the other from Campbell. At the end of her double Campbell was able to advance to third and put herself in position to score on the next chance. Campbell would cross home on the next play, a groundout by Jester, to score the eighth run and end the game.
The Royals racked up nine hits. Goode, Turner, Campbell and Lathbury each had two hits and Waldrop contributed one.
Game Two
The Lions scored an unearned run to start the second game. Kaylyn Klatt reached first base after being walked by Queens pitcher Chantal Dodge. Klatt was able to score two plays later on a throwing error.
The rotation for Queens was the right one in the second game, just like the first. Leadoff batter Goode singled, and advanced when Amanda Bowman (Kernersville, N.C,, Glenn) grounded out. Goode was in scoring position, but stole third to make it just a little easier. Turner walked then stole second. With two on, Lathbury grounded out allowing Goode to score and tie the game a 1-1. Campbell lined out to end the inning.
Turner scored the Royals next run in the third inning. After singling to center field and stealing second, Lathbury's second double of the day brought Turner home.
Queens blew up in the fourth scoring five runs. Dodge started the inning with a double and a sac-play by Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, Conn., New Britain) advanced Dodge to third. Goode singled on the next play, driving in Dodge. Amanda Bowman opened up and homered over the center field fence picking up two RBIs.
Turner was on third when Lathbury recorded her first homer of the year, giving Queens a 7-1 advantage.
In the last three innings Dodge gave up just one hit and closed the game by catching Samantha Clement looking. Dodge struck out eight batters on the day.
Queens outhit Concord 7-5 and of the seven hits the Royals had two doubles and two homeruns. Katie Billingslea led the Lions with two hits.
