CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) scored the golden goal in tonight's quarterfinal round win against Erskine College.
Queens University of Charlotte, the number two seed, defeated the Fleet, the number seven seed, 2-1 just a little over four minutes in to overtime. Erskine ends their season with the loss, while the Royals advance to the semi-final round of the 2010 Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament against Pfeiffer University who defeated Limestone 1-0 earlier in the afternoon.
After a first half deadlocked at zero, the Royals scored a goal in the 59th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) created a Queens corner kick by pressuring Erskine's keeper and Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) took the kick. A battle on the ground cleared the ball out to Wright who hit the ball with her right foot on her first touch for the finish.
The Royals held the lead for about 20 minutes before Erin Gray snuck a shot into the goal from midfield making the score 1-1. Gray's shot was the last of regulation play leading the game into overtime.
Wright would strike again in overtime scoring after Foil stripped a ball from Erskine and passed to Kelsey Howard (Marietta, Ga., Dominion Christian). Howard played the ball through to Wright and Wright finished after beating Erskine's defense and ripping a shot with her left from 20 yards out.
The Royals defense held the Fleet to only one shot, while Queens took 17 while also winning 10 corner kicks.
Queens will play host to the number three seeded Pfeiffer University Thursday night at 7pm.
