CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In an extremely evenly matched Conference Carolinas contest with Queens University of Charlotte and Mount Olive College, the visiting Trojans came out with 61-59 win.
The game saw six tied, six lead changes and the largest lead of the game was just seven points, held by Queens (24-17).
The Royals (14-12/13-8 CC) trailed by one with just 45 ticks left on the clock and it jumped out to three when Mount Olive's (21-5/17-4 CC) Tomeka Prichard made a field goal with 23 seconds left.
Marissa Hudley (Charlotte, N.C., Harding University ) launched a three, but he ball wouldn't fall. On the rebound Erin Goldner (Matthews, N.C., Piedmont) was fouled.
Goldner sank her first free throw, and missed the second leaving Queens two points behind the Trojans.
Ashley McGuirt (Indian Trail, N.C., Providence Day)attempted a three with three seconds left for the win, but the Trojan defense was able to block the shot.
At the end of the first half the teams were deadlocked at 29. Queens and Mount Oliver went basket for basket for most of the first half, with turnovers playing a factor.
Queens had 11 turnovers and the Trojans were able to convert into eight points, while the Royals converted five turnovers into three points. For the entire 40 minutes the Royals committed 18 turnovers, for 18 Trojan points, and Mount Olive turned the ball over 13 times for nine Royals points.
Both teams had three players in double-digits. Hudley and Shakaria Hamlin (Hartsville, S.C., Hartsville) led Queens with 16 while Jazmine Edmonds (Manassas, Va., CD Hylton) had 12. Prichard led the visitors with 20, Jasmine Whitby had 18 and Shequanta McGee scored 11.
The loss put Queens in a tie for fourth place in the conference and the win puts Mount Olive in a tie for first with Barton College.
