Royals go 2-0 this weekend
BOX SCORE
Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team faught off a UNC-Pembroke comeback Sunday night in Pembroke, N.C., to pick up their second consecutive win. The Royals 2-0 halftime lead gave them the advantage in the non-conference game and lifted them over the Indians by a score of 4-3.
The win snapped a 2-game winning streak for UNCP (2-2-0) and marked the first time the Braves have failed to win when scoring at least three goals since dropping a 5-4 home decision to Catawba on Sept. 15, 2007. Queens (2-1-0), who upended Francis Marion for its first win of the season on Friday evening, won for the fifth-straight time in Pembroke and the third consecutive time in the series. The Royals now own a 7-3-0 mark all-time against UNCP.
David Palma put Queens on the board quickly, intercepting an ill-advised clearance and drilling a shot from 22 yards out that barely squeaked by UNCP netminder Tom Courtney on the far post. Just less than 22 minutes later, Kevin O'Donnell took the second of a series of passes from Logan Berrier and Palma and then dribbled through a host of Braves unchallenged before beating UNCP reserve goalkeeper Horatio Bynes.
UNCP came out on a mission in the opening minutes of the second half, using a 48th minute goal from Carlos Cipriano and a 52nd minute score by Michael Davis to knot the game back up, but Queens answered with a goal by Aaron Doyle at the 56:45 mark, before extending the lead back out to two on Luke Graycheck's goal nearly seven minutes later.
Tito Vicente tallied his second goal of the campaign in the 68th minute to bring UNCP to within one and give the Braves new life, but the Royals stuffed a handful of chances down the stretch to preserve the victory going away.
Queens will be back in action on Sept. 13 in the first conference game of the season. The Royals travel to Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. Game time is set at 4pm.
