Tamalea Pierce (Asheboro, N.C., SW Randolph ) served for the 25th point in the fourth set to even the Queens University of Charlotte contest against Converse College at two sets a piece. In set five Queens stumbled and lost 6-15, to drop to 1-10 on the season and 1-3 in Conference Carolinas play. The visiting Valkyries improve to 1-10 overall and 1-1 in league action.
Queens won its two sets with all-around team efforts. In game one, Tanisha Lea held server for three points to give the Royals a one point lead. Audrey Hurd (Acworth, Ga., North Cobb Christian )extended the lead out to 23-19 and finished the game with the win. The Royals won 25-21.
Converse stole sets two and three by scores of 22-25 and 24-26.
The fourth set was even most of the way through with the teams playing point-for-point. The Valkyries turned play over to the Royals at point 18 to give Queens the lead. In the end, Queens finished Converse off by a score of 25-21.
Set five was all about Converse. They took an early lead and the Royals were unable to change the tide. Converse won the tie breaking match 15-6.
Keatin McKenzie (Coral Springs, Fla., Cardinal Gibbons ) led Queens with 11 kills and Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley )was behind her with 10. Amanda Valbert (Champaign, Ill., Champaign Central )recorded 21 assists. Pierce dug eight balls. At the net Kristin King (Haymarket, Va., Battlefield )and Veronica Arenander (Cincinnati, Ohio, Walnut Hill )each recorded a solo block. Harvey led the team with seven block assists.
For Converse Caitlyn Hemm led the attack with 19 kills and Jannalee Pfeiffer had 11.
The Royals host Coker on Saturday at 2pm. Earlier in the season Queens defeated Coker in five sets.
