CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Mary-Ashley Davino (Roswell, Ga., Roswell )drilled a penalty kick to end the double-overtime Conference Carolinas contest with Barton College this afternoon at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Mario Diehl Park. The Royals came away with the 3-2 in to remain undefeated in league play.
The Bulldogs (7-5-2/6-2-1 CC) struck first when Hilary Peterson finished a cross inside the 18 yard box from Dillon Sauls in the first 25 minutes of play. The remainder of the first half passed by scoreless. Queens (7-6-2/7-0-1 CC) took two more shots, 6-4, than Barton in the half. Barton's Ashley Gregory made three saves while Queens' Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )made one.
Davino evened the game at one-a-piece in the 56th minute with a long high rocket that just passed under the crossbar. Erin Likins (Leavenworth, Kan., Leavenworth )provided the assist.
Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood )added one more for the Royals to give them the 2-1 lead in the 64th minute of play. Johnson's shot was another long bomb that hit the side panel of the goal, just over Gregory's outstretched fingers. Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's )assisted Johnson.
Peterson spoiled the Royals thoughts of a regulation victory in the 85th minute of play. She was assisted by Allie Wilkerson.
Queens dominated the overtime periods taking 11 shots while not giving any up. With a little over one minute in regulation Barton committed a foul inside the 18 and Queens was awarded the PK.
Davino stepped up the ball and drilled it to the left post, scoring the golden goal.
At the end of the 109 minutes Kornacki made two saves and Gregory made 10.
Johnson recorded the game-high seven shots while Peterson and Wilkerson each notched three for Barton. Queens amassed 25 shots and limited Barton to nine.
The Royals face Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., on Tuesday afternoon at 4pm. Barton takes a break from league play and faces UNCP on Oct. 22.
