Royals Volleyball Dominates Belmont Abbey

Queens took 3 sets in a row to capture their fourth win of the season

Charlotte, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte's  Ovens Athletic center was packed tonight as spectators watched their Royals volleyball team battle Belmont Abbey's Crusaders.  The Royals took each set by storm, winning 25-20, 25-13, and 27-25, and successfully dominating Belmont Abbey. Winning in just three sets, and claiming their fourth win of the season, the victory  also marked four conference wins this season-  the most the Royals have seen in the past three years.  Their record is now 4-18 overall, and  4-9 in conference play.

Queens dominated offensively as sophmore  Tanisha Lea (Efland, N.C., Orange Senior ) led the team in kills with 11 for the night.  Senior Keatin McKenzie (Coral Springs, Fla., Cardinal Gibbons ) led the Royals in attacks with 23 for the evening, and eight kills to boot.  Overall, the Royals completed 33 kills, and 75 attacks in total for the team.

Defensively, senior  Tamalea Pierce (Asheboro, N.C., SW Randolph ) led the Royals in digs with 18 for the night, followed closely by senior Veronica Arenander (Cincinnati, Ohio, Walnut Hill ) who recorded 15 in total.  The Royals looked strong, and never faltered in their consistency of play, ending the match in just three sets for the second time this season.

Easily defeating Belmont in the first two sets, the third set provided more excitement as Belmont Abbey rallied to take the lead near the end of play. Belmont's Leanne Cassandra led her team with six kills for the night, and Carrie Markham secured six digs for the crusaders.  Rebekah Weber and Megan Watts both had two aces against the Royals throughout the course of play, but the Royals came back to secure the victory, wrapping up the match with a final score of 27-25.

Queens  next competition will be against Barton College at 7pm on  October 17, 2008 in Wilson, N.C. The Royals look to increase their season wins in this upcoming Conference Carolinas match.  The Royals defeated Barton 3-2 at home in September, so this match on the opposition's court will prove to be a heated competition.
