CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte Department of Athletics is proud to announce their annual summer awards series, celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of its student-athletes during the 2025-26 season.
Award winners will be revealed every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer across the department's official social media platforms. Today, we recognize the winners of the Comeback Athletes of the Year Award, as nominated by the head athletic trainer (Atrium Health).
Comeback Athletes of the Year
Presented by the Department of Sports Medicine to a student-athlete(s) who was affected by a medical situation and returned to competition to contribute to the success of the team.
Men's Winner – Charlie Marcantel, Baseball
After injuries limited portions of both the 2025 and 2026 seasons, Charlie Marcantel battled his way back to become a key contributor for the Royals. Appearing in 29 games with 24 starts, Marcantel recorded 17 hits and five RBI while providing valuable leadership and stability to the lineup. His determination and perseverance throughout the recovery process exemplified the resilience celebrated by the Comeback Athlete of the Year Award.
Women's Winner – Callie DeSchryver, Women's Volleyball
After missing the 2024 season due to injury, Callie DeSchryver returned in 2025 and immediately reestablished herself as one of Queens' most versatile players. She appeared in 26 matches with 24 starts and averaged 2.53 kills per set. DeSchryver finished the season ranked among the team's top five in kills, assists, service aces, digs, and blocks, showcasing her all-around impact and playing a significant role in the Royals' success.
