Women's Soccer Sets Attendance Record Despite Falling 2-0 to UNC Wilmington

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In their inaugural Division 1 opener, the Queens University of Charlotte (0-1) women's soccer program dropped a tough 2-0 decision to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (1-0) on Thursday night at Dickson Field. Despite the loss, the Royals played in front of a record crowd as 825 fans and families gathered to be a part of history.

Turning Point
Following a scoreless opening half, the Seahawks found the back of the net first in the 49th minute when Chloe Mills tapped in a rebound off a corner kick. Despite a solid second half attack from the Royals, the visiting Seahawks defense remained poised and kept Queens out of the net. UNCW would extend their lead late in the second half when Grace Guller set up Talia Parrous right in front of the net for her first goal of the season.

  • ASUN Preseason Goalkeeper Fan Favorite Erica Turner was lockdown in net during the first half for Queens picking up three saves after facing three shots.
  • The Royals saw their first scoring opportunity on a corner kick halted at the 17-minute mark after Savannah Stuart ripped a shot which was blocked by a Seahawks defender.
  • At the 68th minute mark, Queens earned back-to-back corner kicks seeing their best scoring opportunities all game.
  • Coming off a corner kick in the 78th minute, senior Hilda Svensson put a shot on goal from 25 yards out which was deflected off the keeper before hitting the crossbar.
  • The Royals matched the reigning CAA regular season champs earning five corners each while the Seahawks outshot Queens, 6-5.
  • The difference in the evening proved to be the Seahawks ability to put five shots on target while the Royals only managed to get one on net.
  • Freshman Savannah Stuart was impressive in her Royals debut playing 84 minutes and ripping two shots.

Queens will remain at home for a non-conference clash on Sunday, Aug. 21 when the Royals welcome Ball State to Charlotte.
