CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team has announced the signing of Stephen Minor to its roster for the 2020-2021 season. Minor, a 6-0 guard from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will enroll at Queens as a freshman in the upcoming fall semester.
At Winston-Salem Prep Academy, Minor earned all-conference recognition in each of his final three seasons. As a senior, he averaged 17.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 3.1 steals per game, while shooting 82 percent at the free throw line and leading his team to a 22-8 overall record.
Minor and Winston-Salem Prep were scheduled to play Queens signee Kalib Mathews and Henderson Collegiate in the state championship game before the game's cancellation due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The two sides were later named co-champions.
A three-year varsity captain, Minor capped his high school career with more than 1000 points scored and an appearance on his conference's All-Tournament Team in his final campaign.
"Stephen is one of the greatest leaders I've ever coached right up there with Chris Paul," said Andre Gould, Minor's high school coach. "He leads by example and truly exemplifies a phrase I coined 'He Who Works The Hardest Reaps The Greatest Rewards.' That's why he's a state champ, a true winner!"
Queens enters the 2020-2021 campaign after finishing 24-7 overall in 2019-2020, winning 10 of its final 11 games. The Royals capped the year with a fifth-straight top-25 finish in both major national polls, earning the No. 15 ranking in the final media poll and the No. 23 ranking in the final coaches' poll. Queens claimed the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Regional of the NCAA Division II Men's basketball Championship before the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This past season marked the program's fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the 13
th overall.
The Royals return two starters and five letter winners from last year's team. Minor joins Kalib Mathews, Malcolm Stevenson, Kelyn Pennie, Kavan Hill, and Quan McCluney as the sixth member of the 2020 recruiting class.
"Stephen is a true champion and the consummate leader," said Royals head coach
Bart Lundy. "He is everything you want in a point guard and as a person. We are excited to see what he does for our team the next four years."
