CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte women's rugby team (3-0) won its home-opener match Saturday afternoon, defeating Mount St. Mary's University (2-2), 46-12 on Dickson Field at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Royals were led by senior
Antares Lance who ran in three tries of her own in the win. Four more Royals,
Teaghan Steele,
Hailey Thomas,
Angelica Rodriguez, and
Megan Reed, also scored one try each for Queens.
Freshman
Alle English led the Royals in conversions with four along with one penalty kick to account for 11 points total.
Steele was the first to score for Queens five minutes into play, but MSMU answered back with a try from Julie Crochet to tie things up 5-5 at the 13-minute mark.
Lance then ran in her first try of the match at the 20-minute mark and was followed by an English conversion to increase Queens' lead to seven (12-5).
The Mountaineers would score another try and conversion five minutes later to tie the score up once more (12-12), but with another try from Lance and another conversion from English, the Royals headed into the half time break in the lead, 19-12.
In the second half, sophomore Thomas scored her lone try for the Royals just six minutes into play (24-12) and was followed by another Lance try and conversion from English to make the score 31-12.
Queens continued to pull away from the Mountaineers as Rodriguez and Reed both scored back-to-back tries to increase the squad's lead to 29 (41-12).
MSMU would not score for the remainder of the match, as English sealed the win for Queens with another conversion and penalty kick to make the final score 46-12.
Next weekend, the Royals will host Coastal Carolina in a non-conference match during their family weekend event Saturday, September 28. Play is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
