HARRISONBURG, VA. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's rugby team (2-0) won its second NIRA match of the season, 44-12, over Long Island University (0-3) Saturday afternoon, on the campus of James Madison University.
The Royals were led by senior center
Antares Lance with three tries followed by sophomore center
Teaghan Steele who recorded two tries of her own.
Jillian Spranger,
Hailey Thomas, and
Megan Reed each added one try to the scoreboard, while freshman
Alle English also kicked two successful conversions in the win.
Steele was the first to put points on the board for Queens after just one minute into play and was followed by an English conversion to make the score 7-0 early on the Sharks.
The Royals would continue its scoring frenzy in the first half of play with tries from Lance, Steele, and Spranger, and another conversion from English to make the score 29-0.
LIU would add to the scoreboard minutes before the halftime break with a try from Nakoya Hayes and a conversion from Janine Gelles (29-7).
Coming out into the second half, Lance scored her third try of the day just 26 seconds into play and was followed by two more tries from Thomas and Reed to make the score 44-7. LIU added another try from Haniyah Baugh at 22 minutes to make the final score 44-12.
The team will host its home opener next weekend at the Queens Sports Complex against their third NIRA match-up, Mount St. Mary's, Saturday, September 21 at noon on Dickson Field.
