No. 25 Wolves Take Down Royals in Conference Road Meet

Queens has now faced 6 teams ranked inside the top 25 this season

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Taking to the road to face its sixth different opponent ranked inside the top 25 this season, the Queens University of Charlotte men's wrestling team was blanked by No. 25 Newberry College on Thursday night, 47-0, from Eleazer Arena in Newberry, S.C.

The Wolves, a fellow member of the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas, remain undefeated in conference competition at 5-0, while improving to 11-3 overall in the 2018-19 campaign. With one dual meet remaining in the regular season, the Royals continue to look for their first head-to-head win of the season, while moving to 0-17.

Two Royals, Noah Gilbert and Stephon Halliburton, came within a combined three points of picking up individual wins. In the 133-pound weight class, Gilbert suffered a 7-5 decision, while Halliburton came within one point of a victory as a 4-3 decision went against him. Gilbert faced off against Newberry's Timmy Martinez, while Halliburton wrestled Louis Wilson.

Queens' Melvin Rubio was the third member of the Royals to force a decision. Rubio, one of two members of the team with double-digit wins, earned 12 points, most on the team on Thursday. However, it was not enough, falling by a 16-12 decision.

This was the first of two meets for Queens at Eleazer Arena in the span of three days. The Royals are set to compete in the Newberry Open this Saturday, Feb. 9. Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
