Hot Second Half Shooting Leads to Queens Victory over Mars Hill

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 2 Queens University of Charlotte now sits 15-0 on the year after a hot shooting second half of play helped the Royals capture a 93-64 road win over Mars Hill University this evening. The win was the 12th of the season won by double-digits for the Royals who also move to 7-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Lions fall to 2-12 on the year and 0-7 in the league.

Senior guard Todd Withers totaled 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals, three blocks, and two assists to lead Queens in its 29-point victory. Ike Agusi posted 12 points, seven assists, and two steals while Daniel Carr added 12 points, five steals, and four assists.

After a first half that saw the Royals holding just a 38-32 lead at the break, Queens would shoot nearly 70-percent from the floor to increase its lead to 29 points before the final horn sounded. A 9-2 run at the start of the second would help the Royals grow their lead to 13, 47-34, at 17:15 in the second, and a three-pointer from Agusi at 11:08 sparked a 10-4 spurt that put Queens in front 72-52 by the 8-minute mark.

Queens' starters would exit the game with 2:36 to play, and the Royals in front, 85-62. The reserves then closed things out with an 8-2 run thanks to five straight points from Trevor Recio and a triple from Josh Van Weezep.

The Royals outscored the Lions, 52-28, in the paint, and totaled 18 fast-break points to Mars Hills' zero in this evening's game. Additionally, Queens scored 23 points off the Lions' 20 turnovers.

Austin Gilyard led Mars Hill this evening with 23 points off the bench while Vernon Jackson totaled 11 points.

Queens will look to match its program-record 16-0 start last season on Wednesday, January 10 at Newberry College. The Royals swept the Wolves during the 2016-17 season winning 104-86 at home and 89-84 on the road. Queens leads the series, 13-5. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
