Savannah, Ga.- After holding the lead over the No. 2 team in the nation, the Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team fell in the Sunday, May 8, 2016, match 5-2 to Armstrong State. The loss ends the season for the Royals who put together a 15-4 record after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament. Armstrong State moves to 23-2 on the year.
Queens found their rhythm early in the match, coming out of the paired play with a 2-1 lead against the ranked Pirates. Taking the No. 3 court with an 8-5 win from
Jules Athalis and
Ole-Jacob Meum, the Royals posted the first point on the board. The 12-ranked duo of Pablo Gor and Ignacio Hernandez came back to even the score taking court two, in favor of the Pirates; however,
Per-Erik Soler and
Andor Vas rounded out play over the 10
th-ranked doubles pairing in the country, Alberto Casas and Jan Porteset, grabbing a 8-6 victory.
The pressure would soon mount for the Royals who saw courts three and five swing in favor of the opposition. Battling, Queens was unable to hang on as the Pirates tabbed the top flight followed by the deciding point on court four.
Queens ends their season after advancing into the second round of the NCAA tournament.
