Women’s soccer picks up first win of the season at Converse

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2014 season this evening at Converse College, defeating the Valkyries 1-0. The Royals improved their record to 1-1 on the season, while Converse opens its season at 0-1.

It was apparent from the opening kick that the Royals were intent on bringing home a win tonight as Queens' Kelli Gottry got a shot off in the first minute of action. Jill Clark would follow in the third minute with the first shot on goal of the day for Queens, though it was saved by Converse goalkeeper Joscelyn Wallace. Clark would put another shot on frame in the 16th with the same result.

It would be a shot from sophomore midfielder Caitlyn Rodrigues that would put Queens on the scoreboard in the 35th minute. Rodrigues received a pass from Alana Jefferson before taking a touch and firing the ball into the left corner of the goal.

The Royals outshot the Valkyries 7-4 in the opening half with Queens goalkeeper Tori Danchak collecting saves on each of Converses scoring attempts.

Queens held steady with their aggressive offense in the second half as Gottry took a shot on goal in the 47th that was saved. The Valkryries responded soon after with a shot on goal from Alexandra Marquez. However, Danchak was there once more to turn the ball away.

Both teams would combine for a total of 16 shots in the second half, but neither keeper would let anything sneak past them into the net. Rodrigues led the Royals in shots today with four, while Clark and Gottry each added three.

Danchak played 90 minutes in goal totaling eight saves in her first start for the Royals, while Wallace of Converse collected seven.

The Royals return to action on Wednesday when they host North Georgia in their home opener. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Dickson Field.
