Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team began their 2014 campaign this evening at UNC-Pembroke, falling 3-0 to the Braves in non-conference play.
The Braves began the game aggressively attacking Queens' defense taking 14 shots in the opening half. The Royals fell behind early when a header from Rae-Shawna Campbell found the back of the net. Campbell delivered the header in the 19
th minute of play after Carolina Sanchez sent the ball into the box on a long service.
Queens'
Ashley Osiecki tried to equalize the match with a shot in the 20
th, but the ball sailed just above the goal leaving the Braves with the 1-0 advantage.
UNC-P would find the back of the net again in the 26
th minute when a shot by Courtney Crump from the top of the box was saved. Teammate Amber Watkins was there to clean things up and put her team ahead of Queens, 2-0. The final goal of the half would come from Campbell again as she connected on a one-timer from inside the box. Watkins was awarded the assist on the goal in the 35
th minute.
The Royals were outshot 14-8 in the opening half. However, Queens stepped up its defensive efforts in the second only allowing the Braves to get five shots off.
Queens didn't let up their attack in the second half either as Osiecki sent another ball towards the cage in the 51
st to try to get her squad on the board. However, UNC-P goalkeeper Janae Aiken was there to collect the save.
In the 64
th, a header from
Steph Lewis from inside the box would be turned away as well. Queens would deliver three more shots on goal in regulation, but Aiken was there each time halting the Royals' scoring efforts.
Emily Mager and
Tori Danchak split the 90 minutes in goal for Queens, collecting a combined total of nine saves. Aiken finished the game with seven saves for the Braves.
The Royals are back on the road on Sunday at Converse College. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
