Queens unable to upset 10th ranked Wingate

Box Score WINGATE, N.C.--Queens University of Charlotte (4-8, 1-3 SAC) traveled to face the 10th ranked Wingate University (11-1, 4-0 SAC) on Tuesday, September 23, 2014. The Royals forced several long rallying points against the Bulldogs, however were unable to match their stamina falling 25-18, 25-6, 25-11.

Rebecca Cochran and Elizabeth Bialkowski would each grab six kills in the match against the Bulldogs. Cochran would also sweep up six digs and one block, while Bialkowski would give Queens its only ace of the match. Sydney Kunz would post 20 of the 23 assists for the Royals accompanying four digs and two kills.

The 10th ranked Wingate squad would take home 45 digs for the match compared to the 33 total digs from Queens. Wingate would have 14 aces on the night, with three players, Abby Saehler, Katie Bludau, and Lexi Potter, accumulating three apiece. Susie Murach and Cory McGowan would each take seven kills to lead Wingate in the category.

The Royals came out strong against Wingate forcing the Bulldogs into several long rallying points. As time wore on, the experience on the Wingate side would overcome the Royals bench forcing a 3-0 win from the nationally ranked Bulldogs squad.

The Royals started the match by grabbing the first point off the board. The two teams would hang together until Abbey Saehler would start the Bulldogs off on a slow 5-0 climb that included two aces from 6'1" sophomore Saehler. Cochran and Alex Thompson would post a huge block to bring the Royals back within two at 12-10.  However, the Bulldogs would slowly start to pull away from the Royals heading into the final stretch capping the match off with a service error from the Queens side.

Royals came out into the second set again forcing several long rallying points but were unable to finish them off eventually falling into a 4-0 hole. After a Queens' timeout, Wingate would take another six points before the Royals would be able to get on the board with a hammer from Thompson (10-1). The Royals would bring a small serge rattling off four quick kills two coming Jones, and one each from Cochran and Raines to bring the match to a 16-7 Wingate lead. However, the Bulldogs would finish the set on an 8-0 run to close things out at 25-6.

Queens would again take the first point, but the Bulldogs would scuffle for a 5-2 lead in the third set. Bialkowski would lead the Royals on a tying run securing three kills to bring Queens within two. Kunz would bring the team even closer with a quick sneaking shot over the net before Bialkowski would equalize the game with an ace very next play (7-7). Wingate would call a timeout to regroup before taking a 9-2 run (16-9) that was capped by the Royals' second timeout. Jessica Raines and Bialkowski would grab the last two points for the Royals ending the set at 25-11.

Queens will travel to Tusculum College on Friday, September 26, to face the Pioneers before turning around Saturday to face Mars Hill on the road.
