MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team traveled to face former conference opponent Pfeiffer University this afternoon falling 3-2 to the Falcons in a match that came down to the final minutes of regulation. The loss is the first for the Royals, ranked 22nd in the nation, in the 2013 season bringing their record to 4-1. Pfeiffer now sits at 2-3 on the season.
Â
After an early goal by the Falcons in the second minute of action put the home team ahead, 1-0, the Royals quickly regrouped to tighten up their defense holding Pfeiffer scoreless for the remainder of the first half. Queens would go scoreless as well despite putting three shots on goal.
Â
With the second half underway and neither team leaving much breathing room for their opponent to see the net, Pfeiffer was able to sneak a ball into the net in the 63rd on a shot from Brae Buster. The Royals, staying disciplined in their attack, would respond in the 75th with freshman midfielder Caitlyn Rodrigues scoring her sixth goal of the season from in front the net after receiving a cross from freshman defender Ashley Osiecki.
Â
Rodrigues' goal was all the Royals needed to get their momentum going on the offensive end as they were able to tie the game up, 2-2, five minutes later when freshman forward Kelli Gottry took a shot that zipped past Pfeiffer's goalkeeper into the bottom right corner of the net. Fellow freshman forward Cassandra Nelson was awarded the assist on Gottry's second goal of the season.
Â
Unfortunately, Pfeiffer's Aaliyah Jackson would have the final shot of the game in the 87th scoring what would become the game winner as the clock ran down to zero.
Â
Jessyca Young completed the day in goal with three saves, while Pfeiffer's Kate Halligan recorded four saves.
Â
The Royals will be back in action at Dickson Field on Wednesday as they host Tusculum College at 5 p.m. for their conference opener.
