Royals fall to Newberry on the road

Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (6-2-2) traveled to Newberry College (5-4) this afternoon falling 2-0 to the Wolves. The loss was the first in conference for Queens who now sits at 2-1-2 in the league. Newberry improves to 3-2 in the SAC.

It appeared Queens would be the first to score as Caitlyn Rodrigues and Jennifer Swanstrom took two early shots putting pressure on Newberry's defense. However it would be Newberry who scored first in the ninth minute when a cross from the Wolves took a high bounce finding its way into the net off of Queens' keeper.

Queens fought to equalize the match with two of their shots landing in the hands of Newberry's keeper. The Wolves would take a 2-0 advantage in the 36th when Gabrielle Brodie put the ball in the net from just inside the 18. The 2-0 score would hold until the break.

The Royals' defense stepped up huge in the second half as Newberry sent 13 shots their way, not finding the back of the net once. Unfortunately Queens, still in the hunt for two goals, was not able place the ball past the goal line before the end of regulation giving Newberry the home win.

Cassandra Nelson led the Royals with two shots on the day. Goalkeeper Kelsey Seretis completed the game with six saves.

Queens will travel to Catawba College on Wednesday to face the Indians at 5 p.m.
