Queens blanks Mars Hill at home

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team hosted Mars Hill University this afternoon defeating the Lions 5-0 at Dickson Field. The Royals improve to 4-2-2 in the South Atlantic Conference and 9-3-2 on the season following the victory, while Mars Hill drops to 1-6-1 in the league and 2-9-2 on the year.

The Royals were able to strike first with just under 10 minutes played as Kelli Gottry received a pass over the defense from Caitlyn Rodrigues. Gottry would turn on the speed to keep ahead of the back line before firing a shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

After delivering an arsenal of shots in the direction of Mars Hill's goalkeeper Tori Stajduhar, Rodrigues would find herself on the serving end of another goal from Queens; this time coming from senior forward Brooke Foil. Foil, after collecting the pass from Rodrigues, would get behind her defender on the right side before putting Queens' second point on the board in the 40th minute.

At the half, Queens led the Lions in shots, 18-0.

Out of the break, Queens would get an opportunity to score in the 46th winning a corner kick. Defender Ashley Osiecki stepped up to deliver the ball into the box as she has all season, this time scoring her third goal of the season on the set piece opportunity. As Osiecki's ball curled towards the net, Mars Hill's keeper would get a hand on it trying to push it away from the goal. Instead the ball bounced off of her hand and into the goal resulting in a 3-0 lead for the Queens.

The Royals, holding a comfortable lead, did not halt their attack there as they stayed aggressive on the offensive end, while not letting Mars Hill get past their back line. On a few occasions, the Lions were able to sneak a few through balls into the box, but Queens keeper Jessyca Young didn't hesitate to come out and break up the scoring opportunities before they played out.

After collected two assists in the first half, Rodrigues would notch a goal in the 55th, heading the ball past Mars Hill's keeper off of a corner kick from Osiecki. The goal was the Mooresville, N.C., native's seventh of the season

Gottry would finish the scoring for the day in the 63rd with her seventh goal of the year after dispossessing a Mars Hill defender and going one-on-one to beat the Lions' keeper for the 5-0 score.

The Royals displayed their clear dominance throughout today's game putting on a shooting clinic for the visiting Lions after taking 29 shots to Mars Hills' zero. The Royals also won 13 corner kicks to Mars Hill's zero. Young collected the win in goal which was her fourth shutout of the season.

Stajduhar of Mars Hill collected 11 saves.

Queens will be on the road for their next three games before returning to Dickson Field for Senior Day against Lenoir-Rhyne University at 2 p.m. They will travel to take on Wingate University on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
