Women’s soccer falls in conference opener

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Nine shots would follow Diamond Russos' (Raleigh, N.C., Sanderson) goal, which brought the Royals to within one of the visiting Pfeiffer Falcons, as Queens University of Charlotte tried to tie things up in their conference opener with the Falcons. However, the Royals couldn't connect as Pfeiffer took the 3-2 win. Queens drops to 1-3 on the season, while Pfeiffer improves to 2-2.

In a game that began an hour late due to a lightning delay, the Falcons struck first getting a goal in the 24th minute. The Royals' Nadia Butt (Houston, Texas, Cypress Lakes) responded with her second goal of the year in the 38th after receiving a pass from Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) who was awarded the assist on the play. However, Pfeiffer's Aaliyah Jackson would put the Falcons ahead, 2-1, just before the half, putting the ball in an open net after Queens' keeper had been pulled out of the goal to make a save on a shot just a second before Jackson's.

Almost two minutes into the second half, Pfeiffer's Katlyn Stevens put the Falcons ahead 3-1 with a ball she placed into the back right corner of the net. Queens would answer at 53:12 when Russos fired a ball into the back of the net after rebounding a save. The Royals stayed aggressive throughout the remainder of play fighting to score another goal, but came up unlucky as the Falcons took the win.

The Royals outshot Pfeiffer 18-11 and won the battle for corner kicks 8-3. Wright led all players on the field with five shots on goal, while Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) collected four saves in goal.

Britt Polly collected the win in goal for Pfeiffer after getting 11 stops.

Queens is back in action on Monday at 3 p.m. at Newberry.
