Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Two penalty kicks for the Royals led them to a 2-1 victory over Mount Olive College tonight in women's soccer action. Queens University of Charlotte improved their league record to 2-1 (4-5 overall) on the year, while giving the Trojans their third conference loss of the season (1-3, 1-7-1).
Tonight's game featured a scoreless first half up until the 41
st minute when the Trojans committed a foul on junior
Sarah Hawley (Charleston, W.Va., Capital) in the box. The foul resulted in a penalty kick, which senior
Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) capitalized on putting the Royals up 1-0. Queens' Hawley tried to strike again for a 2-0 lead in the 45
th, but Mount Olive's keeper was able to make the stop holding the score at 1-0 heading into the break.
Wright stayed aggressive in the second taking two shots early before being tackled in the box once more 15 minutes into the half. Once again, the senior cashed in on the penalty kick putting Queens ahead, 2-0.
The Royals held off the Trojans attack until the 65
th minute, when Daisy Thomas found herself alone with the ball following her teammate's shot that came off the post. Her goal brought the home team to within one. Queens' defense responded turning up the pressure to hold out for the road win.
Queens outshot the Trojans 14-9 with Wright's six shots leading the way. In goal,
Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) collected five saves.
The Royals will travel to face Converse College on September 22 at 7 p.m.
