Russos nets golden goal in Queens victory

Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C.- Queens University of Charlotte's Diamond Russos (Raleigh, N.C., Sanderson) scored a header off of a corner to solidify the Royals' 1-0 double overtime victory over Newberry College this afternoon in women's soccer action. The win improves Queens' record to 2-3 on the season. Newberry drops to 2-2-1.

Outshot 12-5 in the first half, Queens' keeper, Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury), stopped four shots on the frame, while the back line blocked two additional shots to hold the score at 0-0 heading into the break.

The second half shot count was much closer with the Royals holding a one shot advantage. Queens saw a chance to score in the 84th minute when Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) took a shot after drawing Newberry's keeper out of the net. However, Sload's shot was blocked. Queens would have another chance in the last play of regulation when Sload served a corner into play, which was received by Sarah Johnson (West Columbia, S.C., Brookland-Cayce). Johnson fired the ball for the win, but it was blocked by a Wolves defender sending the game into overtime.

The Royals carried the momentum from the final ten minutes of regulation into the first overtime, outshooting Newberry 2-1 and drawing a corner kick late in the first overtime. Fifty-six seconds into the second overtime, Queens drew another corner kick which was sent to the far post by Sload. The bending corner kick was headed out of the air by Russos, and into the back of the net for the Royals victory.

Seretis finished the game with six saves for her second shutout of the year.

The Royals are back at home on Thursday against Catawba College at 6 p.m.
