Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team defeated Carson-Newman College 3-0 in their home opener this evening at the Queens Sports Complex. With the win, the Royals begin the season at 1-0, while the Eagles begin theirs at 0-1.
The Royals began the game with a fast pace looking to get on the scoreboard early. Though outshooting the Eagles 3-0, Queens couldn't find the back of the net in the first half as the horn sounded with a 0-0 score.
The second half was a different story as the Royals fired the ball into the net three times en route to picking up their first victory of the season. The first goal came from
Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) who grounded the ball into the net after receiving a pass from
Macie McGuffin (Dallas, Texas, Birdville) on a free kick in the 55
th minute. Queens'
Nadia Butt (Houston, Texas, Cypress Lakes) would follow with a goal of her own about two minutes later after running through a crossed ball from Foil that she booted into the back of the net. The goal was the first of Butt's in her collegiate career.
Queens' final goal would come in the 72
nd minute when
Sarah Hawley (Charleston, W.Va., Capital) connected with the ball off a corner from
Mary Stringini (Shorewood, Minn, Minnetonka). Hawley headed the ball over the keeper's hands giving the Royals a 3-0 lead, which they held on to for the remainder of play.
The Royals outshot Carson-Newman 7-5.
Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) earned the shutout win in goal for Queens with two saves. Foil led all players on the field with three points.
Taking the loss in the net for the Eagles was Kendra Ivans.
The Royals return to the field on Sunday at 11 a.m. to take on Clayton State University. The Lakers defeated Pfeiffer University 3-1 in the first game of the day. Queens' last nonconference win before tonight came against the Lakers in 2010 when they defeated Clayton State 3-1.
