Vawter leads Royals as they roll past Knights

Queens defeated St. Andrews 5-0.

LAURINBURG, N.C. – Senior defender Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) led the Royals with two goals this afternoon as they picked up their first win of the season defeating St. Andrews Presbyterian College 5-0 in an away match. With the win, Queens University of Charlotte begins conference play at 1-0. The Knights fall to 0-3 in the league.

The Royals dominated today controlling the ball throughout the game taking a season high 44 shots to the Knights' one.

At the break, Queens had a comfortable 4-0 lead. Vawter put the Royals on the board first placing the ball in the net on a header off a corner kick. Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) was awarded the assist on the play. Five minutes later Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) scored her third goal of the season off of a feed from Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside)Macie McGuffin (Richland Hills, Texas, Birdville) would assist on the final two goals of the half netted by Kathryn Sylvester (Cary, N.C., Apex ) and Sarah Johnson (West Columbia, S.C., Brookland-Cayce), respectively.

Vawter's second goal found the back of the net early in period two. After the Royals won a corner kick, Amanda Wright stepped up serving the ball into the box. Defender Anna Decker (Sea Girt, N.J., Wall ) took a header that was blocked by the Knights. Vawter rebounded the ball and shot it into the left corner of the net for Queens' fifth goal of the game in the 53rd.

The Royals finished the game winning 14 corner kicks to St. Andrews' one. Kelsey Seretis played the entire 90 minutes in goal for Queens facing no shots on goal, while Hanna Platt played in the opposing team's net collecting 17 stops on the day.

Queens will return home to take on Limestone College on Tuesday, September 20 at 5 p.m.
