CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte played its home opener of the season tonight against the Wolves of Newberry College losing 2-1. The Royals drop to 0-4 on the season as Newberry improves to 3-1.
The first half began and ended with a 0-0 score as both teams had a hard time finding opportunities to put the ball in the net. Queens edged the Wolves in shots taking four to the visitor's three.
Newberry was first to score in the second when Mary Stanton stayed persistent with a ball in the box creating a shot opening. After breaking in to the box, she battled through a few Queens defenders to find the back of the net in the 63rd minute.
About five minutes later the Royals responded. A corner kick served into play and forced out of the box by the Wolves was cleaned up by freshman
Macie McGuffin (Richland Hills, Texas, Birdville) who booted a one timer from the 18 in to the net tying the game up in the 68th minute. The goal was McGuffin's first of her career.
Ten minutes later Jesse Langdon of the Wolves would sneak a ball into the net for the game winner.
The Royals took 10 shots to Newberry's five in today's match.
Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va., Maury) tallied one save in goal for Queens while Emily Rhoades of the Wolves notched seven.
Queens returns to the field on Tuesday to face Wingate University at 6pm at the Queens Sports Complex.
