Royals win 3-1 over Pfeiffer in regular season finale

The Royals defeated the Falcons 3-1.

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Three first half goals was all Queens University of Charlotte needed in the opening 45 minutes to claim a 3-1 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. The Royals move to 7-10-1 overall, 7-4-1 in league play and will be a five or six seed in Monday's conference tournament opener traveling to either Belmont Abbey or Limestone. The Lady Falcons end the regular season at 8-9-1, 7-4-1 and will be either a six or seven seed traveling to either Mount Olive or Belmont Abbey. Final seeds and pairings will depend on the outcome of tonight's King/Converse match.

The Royals jumped on the board first just 4:56 into play as Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) found Kathryn Sylvester (Cary, N.C., Apex ) who put home her fourth of the year and first of two on the day. Later in the 11th minute, Pfeiffer got the equalizer as Alyssa Wombwell sent a perfect pass downfield to Rachael Shapelow who tallied her first of the season.

Two minutes later, Queens would convert on their go-ahead goal as Sylvester corralled a loose ball after an initial shot by Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) was knocked down by Falcon keeper Jamie Alcala. Vawter's saved shot rebounded over to Slyvester who quickly notched her second of the day and fifth of the season. Insurance in the form of a Brooke Foil (Knightdale, N.C., Knightdale) strike came later in the 21st minute.

Queens outshot Pfeiffer 16-8 in the match with 10 on goal to the Falcons' four. Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) turned aside three shots in the win while Alcala blocked seven in the loss.
