CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Diamond Russos (Raleigh, N.C., Sanderson) netted her first collegiate goal this afternoon helping the Royals defeat Converse College 1-0 in women's soccer action. Queens University of Charlotte improves to 6-9-1 on the season and 6-3-1 in the league. The Valkyries drop to 2-13-1 on the year and 2-9 in Conference Carolinas.
The first 45-minutes of play went by scoreless as the Royals outshot the Valkyries 10-0. Queens also held the advantage in corner kicks winning eight to Converse's zero.
Queens kept attacking on offense in the second and it paid off in the 71
st minute when
Diamond Russos met a poorly cleared ball in the box one timing it over Converse's goalkeeper, Katie Wasylko, into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Kristen Wright almost netted an insurance goal after beating her player one-on-one for a shot that landed just outside the pipe. However, Russos' goal proved to be the game-winner as no other goals were scored in the match.
The Royals ended regulation with 18 total shots to Converses' zero. Queens also won 13 corner kicks as the Valkyries won zero.
Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) of Queens takes the win in net while Wasylko of Converse takes the loss after collecting five saves.
