No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne escapes Royals

The Royals were defeated 2-1.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team played a non-conference match against Lenoir-Rhyne University, ranked sixth in the nation, falling to the Bears 2-1. The Royals are now 5-9-1 on the season while Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 13-1.

After a scoreless first half Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) scored a goal just 29-seconds into the second half to give Queens a 1-0 lead over the visiting Bears. Hope Hartman (Buies Creek, N.C., Homeschool) assisted on the goal. However, Lenoir-Rhyne was able to rally from behind scoring two goals for the win.

Elizabeth Hawes netted the game-tying goal for the Bears with 62:47 on the clock. Carley Griffin and Laura Linehan were each awarded assists on the score.

Griffin then scored the game-winner in the 76th minute as the Bears escaped an upset by the Royals.       

The Royals were outshot 22-7 in the match and took five corner kicks to Lenoir-Rhyne's six. Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) collected 11 saves in the net for Queens. Hirschy stopped six shots on goal in the first half.

Queens returns to the field for Senior Day against Converse College on Saturday, October 22 at 3:30 pm.
